Small Bathroom Renovation – Melbourne CBD Case Study
Tags: Design Ideas , Case Study |
Constructed in 1876, the former Bank of Australasia building is a neoclassical structure located on the corner of Queen Street and Collins Street. The five-storey building played an integral part in Melbourne’s economy during the Gold rush and the great depression.
The landmark building at 394 Collins St Melbourne is one of our city’s premier buildings.
The building now offers both owner occupied apartments and temporary, serviced accommodation for guests.
Having recently acquired an apartment in the building, our client – Anne – sought to update the bathroom to her own tastes.
The most recent refurbishment was now out-dated and she was keen to create a light, modern and functional bathing space that would suit her for years to come.
Living in the CBD is incredibly convenient. From restaurants to parks and theatre to shopping – everything’s close by. The apartment was refurbished a few years ago but I was keen to add my own personal touches’ says Anne.
Given the size of the bathroom and the building’s construction, we recommended Anne keep the current locations of the fittings and facilities. Our designers then set about understanding client preferences and designed a look and feel that was sympathetic to the space.
Undertaking a renovation in a working hotel was always going to introduce challenges. So, keeping noise, dust and rubbish from interrupting the experience of paying guests was a key part of the brief.
The first task was to demolish the existing bathroom so this was done during daylight hours and waste was carefully removed from the apartment via the customer lift. (In fact, labourers even wiped down the wheels of the waste bin before leaving the apartment with each load to avoid marking the carpet in the hotel foyer.)
The renovation required the removal of the bath to create an elegant walk in shower with bench and sitting space. We then updated all the finishes, creating crisp, clean lines throughout using a simple monochrome colour scheme to deliver the look Anne wanted.
